Washington was so ticked off at the "Republicans" - especially newspapers supported by Thomas Jefferson, and their constant harangue of him and his administration (except Secretary of State Jefferson, one supposes), that Alexander Hamilton rewrote Washington's Farewell Address to done down the bitterness in Washington's draft.Washington's successor, John Adams, who took the partisan attacks with considerable more grace than General Washington, was slammed even more by Jefferson and others - solely for political ends.In recent years Americans have had it too good. Recently, During a speech before Congress, President Obama declared (emphatically) that the new healthcare proposal absolutely excluded illegal aliens from receiving any benefits whatsoever, wherein Congressman Joe Wilson famously demurred. The ensuing media coverage led by “outraged” Democrats and Conservative talk show hosts looking to be fair and balanced, served the party-system objective of reducing the real issues of the debate to the usual name calling.That President Obama, ahem, erred in his conclusions (see editorial and letter to the editor on my DOMESTIC ISSUES page) becomes irrelevant in the face of the entertainment value of the more interesting name calling. Why, then, should anyone care about Mr. Wilson‘s “you lie” outburst? Certainly Mr. Wilson doesn’t. He’s raised a ton of campaign money since he uttered those words.We all should be concerned. Serious issues need to be properly addressed by those whom we elect to govern our nation’s business. 1. Define the problem. If you don't know what's broken, how can you fix it? 2. Solicit opinions from a diverse group of people as to how to fix the problem.3. Debate the proposed bill in an open bi-partisan way. 4. Make the proposed bill brief, available in plain English for public review.5. Pass the bill on its merits.1. Most people (85%) don’t think the healthcare system is broken enough to just scrap it.2. Democrats didn’t ask anyone’s opinion - not even Republican colleagues.3. Democrats formulated their bill behind closed doors away from the press, you and me.4. Brief? 1,000 pages brief and climbing.5. Merits? I think Joe Wilson (the Congressman, not the Wannabe) expressed all of our opinions on the merits.So, when someone objects to being steamrolled, do progressives debate and defend their ideas? Kwitcherkiddin’ (as Dear Abbie used to say). Nope. They attack the messenger. You think the Obama plan is wrong - you’re a racist; to costly - you’re heartless; and so forth.The American People have the best medical care in the world. To just dump it and replace it with a government-run program is just plain stupid. The Healthcare Reform bill sucks. If 83% (Dems own poll) of the American People are happy with their healthcare, why would our politicians want to make sweeping changes? They purposely made up a bill that was too long for anyone to digest; lied about what was and was not in the bill; then tried to ram it through Congress before anyone caught on.Sort of puts new meaning to the word “representative” does it not?If the goal of the liberals (hereinafter “progressives” with a small ‘p‘) really was to fix the healthcare system, they could have done so. No, their objective is to nationalize the healthcare system; to create even more dependency on progressives and ultimately to win many more voters to the Democratic Party.
